Activity Advocates takes IDD youth and teens ages 13–22 into their community — with trained staff at their side — to build the real-world skills that lead to independence.
We don't simulate life in a classroom. We go out into San Diego — and practice it. Every outing is a structured, staff-led experience designed to build confidence, independence, and real capability.
Every outing targets the foundational skills IDD youth need to navigate life with greater independence. Not once — but repeatedly, across different settings and situations.
Counting change, making purchases, handling cash, and understanding the value of money in everyday transactions.
Placing orders, asking for help, making requests of strangers, and building confidence in real social exchanges.
Moving through public spaces — following directions, staying with a group, and engaging with the world around them.
Choosing what to order, what to buy, and how to spend time — building the habit of self-directed thinking.
Activity Advocates was built around a single belief: the best place to learn how to navigate the world is in the world itself.
Our trained staff take small groups of IDD participants on community outings throughout San Diego. At every step, they coach participants through the moments that matter — making a purchase, ordering a meal, navigating a new space, asking for directions.
We don't do the work for them. We stand beside them while they do it. That's the difference.
Families, schools, and regional centers can refer IDD youth ages 13–22. We learn about each participant's goals and comfort level before they join a group.
Small groups head out into the San Diego community with our trained staff. Each outing has a focus, and every participant gets hands-on coaching throughout.
Repeated practice in real settings adds up. Over time, participants grow more confident, need less support, and are better equipped to engage with the world on their own terms.
IDD youth are often kept from the everyday community experiences other young people move through without a second thought. Not because they can't participate — but because they rarely get the structured opportunity to practice.
"Independence isn't something you teach in a room. It's something you build one real experience at a time."
